Deze week in Amsterdam

Komende week zijn er twee mooie evenementen in Amsterdam waar ik op de één of andere manier bij betrokken ben.

Aanstaande donderdag 21 februari vieren stripblad Zone 5300 en filmtijdschrift Schokkend Nieuws hun honderdste nummer. Locatie: de bovenverdieping van de Melkweg. Er is live muziek, er zijn films, dj's en ander vermaak. In de allerlaatste uurtjes zet ik nog een plaatje op, als dj Dirty Shirt. Vanaf 19.30. Bekijk hier het Facebook-evenement.

En op zondag 24 februari vindt er weer een Oscarnacht plaats in De Balie, met eerst een screening van het genomineerde Silver Linings Playbook, een filmquiz en, vanaf een uur of drie als ik het goed heb, de uitzending van de Oscar-uitreiking. Ik maak voor het derde jaar achtereen deel uit van het panel deskundigen dat zijn mening over het hele gebeuren geeft. Lees meer op de site van De Balie.

PASSION

Sure, Brian De Palma made straight forward crime classics like The Untouchables and Scarface but I've always liked his kitschy, quasi-erotic, Hitchcock inspired psycho thrillers best. Those who are with me, will surely enjoy De Palma's latest film, Passion, a eurotrashy neo noir about two female frenemies. Isabelle, a shy but talented young woman working in advertising, and Christine, Isabelle's cold-hearted bitch of a boss, go from friends to rivals in a plot that illustrates every cliché a man might have about women. And no matter how many smart phones and Skype conversations De Palma put in his script, it only takes one saxophone solo to reveal that this is a 90s movie by heart. And I love it.

Andrei Konchalovsky, 1985

Nogal brute actiefilm die begint in een gevangenis waar de gedetineerden er met geweld onder worden gehouden en eindigt in een op hol geslagen goederentrein in ijskoud Alaska. Met Eric Roberts als de innemend naïeve Buck en Jon Voigt in een van zijn beste rollen ooit als de verbitterde anti-held Manny. Spannend, hard en schaamteloos cynisch.

GROUNDHOG DAY

Aanstaande maandag worden we naar het allerdiepste puntje van onze winterdepressie getrokken, dan is het namelijk weer "blue monday", de meest deprimerende dag van het jaar. Filmtheater De Fabriek biedt tegenwicht in de vorm van een van de meest klassieke onder de Amerikaanse komedies: Groundhog Day. Aan mij de eer om de film in te komen leiden. Bijvoorbeeld door een parallel met Franz Kafka te trekken...

THE RUNNING MAN

The Running Man
Paul Michael Glaser, 1987

De VPRO Gids geeft The Running Man drie sterren en schrijft: 'Deze film is heel erg mal, maar op een zelfkritische manier ook passend, innemend, humoristisch, keihard en spannend.' Juist ja, mal én innemend. Twee omschrijvingen die toch ideaal in elkaar passen, vooral als Arnold "The Governator" Schwarzenegger de hoofdrol heeft. Nemen actiefilms zichzelf vandaag de dag vreselijk serieus, zelfs als ze de draak met zichzelf steken, in de jaren 80 en 90 wist men toch beter de balans tussen serieus en belachelijk te vinden. Misschien heeft het iets met pretentie te maken. (Ik kijk jou aan, Christopher Nolan.) Hoe dan ook, The Running Man biedt zalig vermaak, Schwarzenegger blijft onovertroffen. Een guilty pleasure waar alleen VPRO Gids-lezers zich schuldig over hoeven te voelen.

IFFR 2013

Simon Killer

The 42nd edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam is promising to be an excellent one. But, as always: too many trees! Cannot see the wood! That's where we come in, taking you gently by the hand through this year's program. First off, there's a program section called Bright Future, which is all about upcoming talent. Then there's a program called Spectrum, which concentrates on experienced filmmakers. And finally Signals will treat you to various retrospectives. Found your way yet? No? Please bare with us then. 

Borderline Films

The three New York dudes behind Borderline Films have previously delivered awesome indie flicks like Afterschool and Martha Marcy May Marlene. Their latest production Simon Killer  is said to rely on a highly suspenseful atmosphere, revealing only a few details on protagonist Simon, an American graduate roaming the dark alleys of Paris. "A dark ride", according to The Guardian, " distinguished by a seductive, urgent score and soundtrack".

Dominik Graf 

One of Signals' retrospectives revolves around Dominik Graf (1952), some obscure German director. Graf's genre movies are said to be both entertaining and disturbing, revealing not only the darkest parts of the human soul but also of German society. That doesn't grab you? How about this: this man also directed some legendary episodes of über-Krimi Tatort. 

Sound Stages 

Sound Stages, also part of Signals, emphasizes the role that music plays in cinema and the importance of acoustics. There'll be live performances on special locations, installations by artists and filmmakers and various presentations and projects. Filmmaker and artist Mika Taanila, filmmaker John Akomfrah and multimedia artist Tony Cokes have confirmed to be part of Sound Stages. 

Miike Takashi 

And last but certainly not least is Rotterdam favorite Miike Takashi, whose disturbing Audition shocked festival goers back in 2000. Takashi's latest, Less of the Evil, is about the lengths a school teacher is willing to go to in order to put an end to bullying. But - who will stop the teacher?
